Normally my CPU fan shows a minimum of 1200 and max of 2600, but sometime yesterday I got this, showing a min of 1854, but actual speed of 1200.  Do you know what may be going on here? A restart put it back to the usual. 

I too would like a way to disable update checks. I set up my parent's computer, and I want to keep everything absolutely as simple as possible for them, including preventing them from being bombarded with update notifications left and right. So I turn off all auto update checking in all applications...
