Comodo InternetSecurity issue: Startup Screen Disappears

Post by Bernard »

Official response from Comodo support:
Open Comodo Internet Security and click on Defense+ tab, click on Defense+ Settings, then click on the Execution Control Settings tab and click on Exclusions at Detect shellcode injections, Click add->browse add the file C:\Program Files\Uninstall Tool\utool.exe and click Apply, Apply, ok.Now you can launch the Uninstall tool.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Downloaded trial version of 'Uninstall Tool' (version 2.9.7) from Crystalidea website.

Download installed successfully.

When application is executed (run) by double clicking 'Uninstall Tool' icon on desktop, the startup screen is displayed only for a moment.

A brief glimse of the opening screen is seen and then disappears.

Can't uninstall 'Uninstall Tool' as the option to replace 'Add or Remove Programs' was allowed during the third installation.

Can't find any reference to this problem in forum discussions.

Using Windows XP Pro (SP3) on a Dell Dimension 8300.

Above problem occurred twice before when downloading and installing 'Uninstall Tool'.

Twice it was installed and removed, before allowing replacement of 'Add or Remove Programs' on third attempt.

Re-downloading , re-installing, and re-running made no change in the problem described above.

It appears everything is normal but can't utilize 'Uninstall Tool' because opening screen won't stay displayed.

Re: Startup Screen Flashes Momentarily Then Disappears

'Comodo Internet Security 5.0' was isolating the 'Uninstall Tool' executable from running immediately after it was detected running.

In particular it was the 'Defense+' feature of 'CIS5' that was shutting 'Uninstall Tool' down immediately after it was started.

Hence the reason for the startup screen to briefly display and then disappear.

'Defense+' recognized a buffer overflow attack (BOA) and instantly isolated (stopped) 'Uninstall Tool' from continuing to run on the system.

When 'Defense+' is disabled within 'CIS5' and 'Uninstall Tool' is started again it continues to run so that user can evaluate 'Uninstall Tool' during the 30 free trial period.

Comodo Internet Security recommendation is to alert the developer of 'Uninstall Tool' to this problem so that the cause of the BOA (buffer overflow attack) can be eliminated.

Hopefully the moderator of this forum will notify the program (software) development team of this problem for users of 'CIS5'.

Dear Bernard,

Thank you for the feedback.

This is a false positive alert of Comodo Internet Security 5.0. We'll contact their technical support in order to fix the problem.

Steven,

Has the 'Comodo Internet Security 5.0' false positive alert caused by use of 'Uninstall Tool' (version 2.9.7) already been fixed through coordination with Comodo technical support?

Recall it was the 'Defense+' feature of 'CIS5' that was disabling use of 'Uninstall Tool' by shutting it down immediately upon detection of it running. I had to disable the 'Defense+' feature in order to run 'Uninstall Tool'. Also recall that 'Defense+' was reporting the observed conditon as a buffer overflow attack (BOA).

This is no longer the situation. I am now able to run 'Unistall Tool' with the 'Defense+' feature of 'CIS5' enabled. However, looking at the 'Defense+' event log it is observed that a 'Shellcode Injection' flag is now noted for 'C:\Program Files\Unistall Tool\utool.exe'.

Is this why 'Uninstall Tool' can now be run unimpeded (whereas before it couldn't) with 'Defense+' enabled? In other words, is the 'Shellcode Injection' flag (assumed now set) a legitimate solution to this issue? Or is there something else going on that needs to be addressed?

This is new territory for me. Please explain what this is all about.

Dear Bernard

We contacted Comodo support, but still get not response from them. Defense+ makes a mistake with its 'Shellcode Injection' flag on Uninstall Tool.

Thank you very much for the detailed report, we have sent them more information about the problem.
