1.4.2 - no Controls visible after system restart

Post by fbl »

On my 2012 Mac Mini version 6.2, running OS 10.8.5, I find that I have nothing in the "Control" column to input my temperatures for activation. Of course, 1.4.0 worked just fine on this same machine.

..., predictably, downloading the program from the website and using it to replace the one that was installed by the automatic update process fixed the issue, at least for now.

I never seem to have much luck with the automatic update process, as I always seem to have to re-download and reinstall. On the other hand, I prefer it this way, as I like to be in control of what gets installed and when, as opposed to having a pop-up appear unexpectedly.

It's related with the fact the fan control is set to sensor-based. Please write us if the problem appears again

The issue of the missing Controls reasserted itself today, until I re-sized the MFC window slightly. This was enough to position the (newly movable) divider between the left and right areas just enough that the Controls snapped back into visibility. This is on Mac OS 10.8.5.

Two steps forward, one step back, or is it the other way around? At any rate, all here is good, for the time being.

So the problem is connected with the devider now? Can you reproduce it by resizing window/devider ?

Every time I "Show Macs Fan Control" after restarting my machine, it opens with the Controls invisible. I tried to move the divider while it was in this state, but it won't move - my guess is that the default window width is too narrow to allow the divider to move.

Enlarging the whole window by dragging on the lower right corner - even just a little - results in the Controls becoming visible, and I can then move the divider back and forth. If I then re-adjust the window size back down to its narrowest, the Controls remain visible, but the divider can't be moved, as before. The Controls then remain visible every time I re-open the window, until I re-boot the machine, whereupon they are hidden once again.

I should mention that due to my vision requirements, I have set the Mac's Desktop View Options to have the fonts display at 16 points, which might be connected to the size of the font display within the MFC window. Also, within the MFC Preferences, I have the "Precise Display of Temperature when Possible" enabled, so all my temperatures are shown to a single decimal place.

I put an issue on that for 1.4.2, will improve that code. Thanks
Every time I "Show Macs Fan Control" after restarting my machine, it opens with the Controls invisible.
Normally the app should remember the previous window position and size. So you just make big enough for the next reboot.

One more thing: could you please make a screenshot with missing controls? Thanks.

PS. We rely on Qt UI framework by Digia, we update it regularly and thus have to fix some UI issues.

Thanks for getting back in touch.
Please make sure it really works!
The other user who reported this problem claims that the dev build didn't solve it.

I'm afraid I have to agree with your other user. Things worked properly yesterday when I first installed the dev version, but today, it's back to its old behaviour of hiding the controls until I resize the window.

Here's the next build, please reproduce the issue once again.
When the controls are still NOT visible, please press the help ("?") button in the window, it will do some diagnostics and tests.

I downloaded, installed and ran the dev build 3, and clicked on the "?" as you asked. How do I get the information it found, to you?

The Dev4 behaves strangely, but it does show the Controls column when it first is asked to appear following a computer restart. A small pop-up window appeared as well, with "visible: yes" in it. It then promptly quits entirely when asked to "Hide to menu bar".

Following a computer restart, pop-up windows appear unbidden, showing "visible: no" and another notice which disappeared too quickly for me to see. It did not automatically start or appear in the Menu bar. Perhaps you know all this already.

Bottom line, the window appears - when it appears - correctly. Following a reinstall of 1.4.2, its first appearance is also correct.

Following yet another computer restart, 1.4.2 had to be started manually, even though the Preference is for it to auto-start with the system. Predictably, 1.4.2 appeared with the Controls column missing but as before, a manual resizing of the window caused it to appear.

So the dev4 version was sterted after computer restart with "visible: no" ? (at least one time). "visible: no" means that controls are not visible
Now let's try build 5, hope it will work!

I'm afraid that, following a computer re-start, dev5 comes up with no Controls visible, provided that prior to the re-start, it had been opened and the window sized to its narrowest allowed width, then closed.

Once opened, a small, manual widening of the window allows the Controls to peak through. Following subsequent re-sizing back down to the narrowest width, they continue to be visible, until the next computer re-start.
