Lower than ambient temperature?

Post by davidmorr »

I installed Macs Fan Control tonight, and everything is set to the defaults. This is OS X 10.8.5 on MacBook Pro.

The strange thing is that the GPU Diode temp (10°C) is lower than the ambient temperature (25°C). It starts about 8 and over time goes up and down a bit before settling around 20 after about 5 minutes. This happens even if the computer has been on for a while and gets restarted, so it is warmed up already.

I am wondering what this means? Could the sensor be faulty?

Lower than ambient temperature?

Does this temperature change with time? Or is it always 10C ?

This model of the Mac switches between IGP and GPU graphics. My observation is that in case the GPU will be activated the temperature switches to
some meaningful value. You can try this by using the Tool gfxCardStatus. Maybe the GPU proximity sensor would give some more meaningful indication of the real
temperature of the GPU.

Thanks, Alex for the info.

Which value is displayed when the GPU is switched?
