S.M.A.R.T. reporting issue with Macs Fan Control

Post by FajitaMidland »

In testing your Macs Fan Control today, I noticed that the program causes a problem with S.M.A.R.T. being reported correctly on the iMac. This occurs with either the Apple Disk Utility or a program called SMART Reporter.

For those wanting to check this on their computers launch Apple Disk Utility and then click on your hard drive and then click the blue info icon. Look for S.M.A.R.T. Status -- do this with the Mac Fan Control running and also without it running.

Mac Fan Control Running with the Apple disk utility I receive the following statement:
S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported

Mac Fan Control Running SMART Reporter I get this error:

smartctl 6.1 2013-03-16 r3800 [x86_64-apple-darwin12.3.0] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-13, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, http://www.smartmontools.org

Read Device Identity failed: Unknown error

=== START OF INFORMATION SECTION ===
Device Model: [No Information Found]
Serial Number: [No Information Found]

...

SMART support is: Ambiguous - ATA IDENTIFY DEVICE words 82-83 don't show if SMART supported.
SMART support is: Ambiguous - ATA IDENTIFY DEVICE words 85-87 don't show if SMART is enabled.
A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.

Quitting your Mac Fan Control program the Apple Disk Utility states: S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified

Now SMART Reporter works with the following information:

smartctl 6.1 2013-03-16 r3800 [x86_64-apple-darwin12.3.0] (local build)
