iMac 27-inch, Late 2009 big problem

Post by alollini »

Hello,
i have two iMac 27-inch, Late 2009 Maveriks 10.9 Build 13A603 2,8Ghz Core i7

one is correctly increasing cpu fan speed on full load, (now 4200 rpm as i speak) it runs perfect.

the other one is not increasing its cpu fan speed, (i see 2092 rpm --BUG-- will soon overheat if i don't quit the app.

i understood the problem so i downloaded Macs Fan Control 1.1.7 on both imacs.

the working mac is showing CPU min 936 current 4195 max 2092 auto

the overheating mac is showing CPU min 936 current 2092 max 2092 auto

if i try to change control to constant speed i cannot go over 2092 rpm.

is there a quick terminal command line to set the cpu fan to 4k + ??

what do you need to fix "Macs Fan Control" so that is is compatible?

PRAM and SMC both reset
then new startup
then launch Macs Fan Control
then set ODD and HDD fans up in order to make the mac not crash from overheating.
boinc running for full load test
(this imac seem to run stable like this but this is very strange behavior)

this mac was unstable earlier using final cut pro x while rendering/exporting.

the same model same config mac just next to this one is running cool, had ODD and HDD fans near 1000 rpm and cpu fan jumps to 4000 rpm when full load (all is on auto - perfect)

Current RPM cannot be more than Max RPM value. Max RPM value of 2092 is correct for this machine (iMac11,1). Obviously 2206 is not enough because CPU temps seem to be hot.

Do you have any other fan controlling software running? I do suspect previous (and maybe even now) usage of smcFanControl, which modifies min rpm values - they are modified!

Increasing of Max RPM for a fan is not possible (at least with current version of MFC).

I recommend you do a good inside clean-up of your iMac (because suspect a lot of dust inside), preferably in a special service, because it's not an easy procedure.

Yes, i will clean the inside (this is obviously the best advice ever)

about "smc fan control", i tried it, i thought is was properly removed, i will check again.

when i am back home i will post you the data of the second mac (i think this other one is even more clogged in dust)

and this one has much lower minimal fan speeds, but its cpu fan is running 4200rpm

Hi and thanks for the information.

Here we have correct minimum speeds.

I wonder why current RPM is greater than Max RPM. That really looks strange... CPU temps look really high as well! Take care.

Wish I could have this iMac model to test, only have iMac11,2, just FYI:

Yes I think the same thing, i tried everything from the outside.

From the font i cleaned the inside screen besel and there was a lot of black dust.

the inside ventilation must be clogged sort of.

I will schedule a full cleaning at the dealer.

this is not a friendly machine to tear down.
