Converting dmg file to iso

I have an 8.7 GB dmg file I am converting to ISO. The process has been going on for over 2 hours. I did a little investigating and the "iso" file shows up as 256 GB in Finder. Is this normal? Shoudl I expect a convert to take this long and create a file that large?

I have just tried another dmg file and it too has maxed out the drive (256 GB) and froze the application. This file make it to about 70% complete where the other only made about 50%. This file is 7.8GB.
Unfortunately I can't upload the files as they are proprietary image builds.

How do you create these dmg files? So I'd have a way to reproduce the issue.
