Top recommended fan speed for HOT Macbook Pro and setting

Post by enorman66 »

My Macbook Pro runs HOT a lot. I set the max fan speeds to almost 6000rpm with another program a while back. MFC works great but with heavy duty computer usage it will max out my fan speed as my temp is up around 185F. I can't remember how to set my max fan speed anymore. What is the max safe fan speed without ruining my fans and how do I set them?

Settings both fans to a SINGLE sensor-based is not correct.

One fan is responsible for one part of laptop (CPU) and the other - usually GPU. You need figure out which fan is responsible for CPU cooling, then set it to sensor-based mode.

Thank you for your input. Please let me clarify; I was NOT complaining about your product. I love your product! I was just asking what the max safe rpm for a Macbook Pro fan was and how you can set this rpm. I wasn't sure if your product permited setting up max rpm's.
I will also change the sensor inputs as you suggested.

A fan can rotate at any speed between min & max. But it shouldn't be rotating with high constant speed all the time because it shortens its life.

There're several way out:

1. Set constant high RPM only when it's required.
2. Play with sensor-based control to reach optimal values
3. Wait for 1.2 version with profiles feature

Which fan is for the GPU and which fan is for the CPU? I have a Macbook Pro 4,1. I'm not sure if the left fan is for GPU/CPU or the right fan.

Thanks.

You can check it out by setting high speed for 'Left Fan' for example and see what happens to temperature sensors.

A plea for others with hot MacBookPro machines --

which sensors are best for choosing between the two different graphics processors?

I can "play with" the choices but too many variables are involved -- the machine may do something different while I'm changing sensor choices and fan speeds. A temperature change can have many causes.

(the Apple Genius told me my persistent crashes must be due to using third party software -- Apple did keep the Mac overnight for a "stress test" and said there's no hardware problem. But having solved many problems over the years by adding extra cooling to both Macs and other computers, I still wonder.)

I wish someone would work up a GUI -- showing the sensors, their readings, the activity at the time, and the fan speeds. Heck, shouldn't it be possible to automate optimal cooling that way? I dunno.

Repeating the question -- does anyone know the layout of the sensors well enough to say what best tracks the GPU? And what best tracks the builtin graphics?

I understand the advice that I can "play with" different sensors.

But I hope someone actually has systematically done that, or else has a working knowledge of where the sensors are placed in the hardware.

Too much changes too fast for "playing with" sensors to be consistent over time.

Failing that -- is there a way to get the longterm results for each sensor in tab delimited form -- along with what was being done in the software (something like AppTamer gives) -- so I can pour them into Excel and ask my Excel guru to help figure out what's cooking?
Heh. Little joke there.

Hi

The GPU and CPU are on the same heatsink in my early 2011 MBP (I changed the thermal paste)
Or maybe the i7 has CPU and GPU in the same chip - I don´t remember well.

Makes little difference which sensor is used...
