Mac Pro 2,1 OS 10.7.5 - CPU diode temp too high

Post by Jbny »

I always thought my mac pro was running too hot and thanks for this great app to help me get control of fans and inside temps. While still keeping it on the quiet side it's amazing how much difference it makes to increase the fan speeds to safer levels and bring temps down.

I have one question: why the CPU diode temperature is not responding to fan speed settings and stays hot up 170 - 180F range and above?

Any thoughts please let me know. Thanks.

Please switch to Celcius, and share screenshot of the main window of Macs Fan Control + technical information from the About dialog.

Here is the paste of the info thanks: - CPU Diode at 77C seems way too high to me.... All fans currently are set to 1440 rpm. AT this speed they are still very quiet and overall temps are way down except CPU Diode..

Jbny, thank you.

Please post here screenshot of the main window (with Celsius option). I really need this

I really think that CPU Diode Temperature 77C is really fine, DIODEs on other CPUs on you MacPro have 75,64 and 63 values C (when tech. information was taken)

You mean this window correct?

Thanks for your thought.. it seems to me as if the cooling airflow of the fans somehow keep missing the place where the diode is located. Wonder why is it so high.. Just recently had my video card knocked out by what now I'm certain of the high inside temps (before installing your app.) and trying to get more control and understand what is going on in there...

Thanks for the screen.

Seems to be a common mac "issue":
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1123915
Everything seems to be running at normal temperatures for this old model under idle conditions. The weird thing is that under high CPU loads (encoding videos mostly) the sensor labeled "CPU A Temperature Diode" is much higher than "CPU Core 1", "CPU Core 2" and "CPU A Proximity". For example, with an HD netflix video playing the cores and proximity are all 64C +/-1C and the temperature diode is 79C. Under nearly 100% CPU, the cores and proximity get up to the high 70s and the temperature diode can surpass 110C. When the load stops the diode falls very rapidly to its idle value.

If the diode is capable of taking the above boiling point 110C then I guess I can live with the reality that it's this high in my machine. I just thought what if something may be blocking airflow around it.....

Thanks again for your thought and clarifying this.

Have a great day!
