1.1.12.2 does not start after updater dialog
Macs Fan Control 1.1.12.2 is installed on an iMac running Snow Leopard, 10.6.8, and has been very effective in controlling the CPU fan, which was running at full speed because of a faulty sensor.
This iMac functions mainly as a file server, and autostarts each morning, mostly unattended.
The problem arising is that, just beginning this morning, there is a dialog box coming up, stating that there is an update for Macs Fan Control. I've checked, and there is no update, but Macs Fan Control won't load until someone physically clicks the CONTINUE button. Meanwhile, the CPU fan runs at full speed ...
Is there a way around this?

Version 1.1.12.2 won't open
Just downloaded Macs Fan Control 1.1.12.2 to my MacBook Pro, running OS 10.8.5. (Have been happily using the previous MFC version for months). New version fails to open - no window, no temperature in the menu bar, nothing. Yes, I've tried control-click to open, same result. Of course, the new version seems to have made the old one disappear, so I no longer have any fan control. Help?

Re: UPDATE DIALOG INTERFERING WITH STARTUP
Hello,
I have experienced the same problem today.
I have been using Macs Fan Control since 7 September 2014 (Version 1.1.12.2).
The application used to start automatically in the background indicated by the fan symbol next to the Volume symbol at the top of the screen of my iMac9,1 running MacOs 10.6.8
Upon today's start (of my Mac) a small notification appeared in the middle of the screen saying that a new version of Macs Fan Control was there, offering a link for the update and two buttons below.
Since I am in general concerned about the safety of such pop up messages, I did not use the link and clicked on "Beenden" (the second button offered to close the notification or application).
I visited the crystalidea website manually, downloaded the current version, extracted the archive and checked the version.
Actually the newly downloaded version is the same I downloaded in September!
The problem now is that Macs Fan Control does not work anymore.
I can double click or select "Öffnen" (Open) from the context menu as often as I want to but nothing appears to happen.
Was the update notification authentic or has somebody misused Macs Fan Control as a back door to hack into my computer?

Re: UPDATE DIALOG INTERFERING WITH STARTUP
music-listener, I also have Macs Fan Control 1.1.12.2 installed on my own iMac 11,1, running 10.6.8, and, mysteriously, it has stopped working today for me as well ... it was working fine just yesterday. I never saw the new version dialog on this machine, unlike the iMac server I referenced in my earlier post.
It seems like, because it is December 1st, something has triggered so that Macs Fan Control no longer runs. Logs show that Macs Fan Control 1.1.12.2 is crashing every time I try to launch it.
I just downloaded the 1.2.0.0 Beta version, and it works, so I'm back to where I was yesterday.
However, I'm a bit concerned with one item I found on my system.
It appears to be an empty file called MACSFANCONTROL, but it's in a very exotic location:
/private/var/folders/Ra/Rahwcn-bFgqn3y5Q-fehl++++TQ/-Tmp-
/private is apparently a hidden directory.
I'd certainly like to know what this is ...

Please update to version 1.1.12.3

Please update to version 1.1.12.3
Re: 1.1.12.2 does not start after updater dialog
Yes, 1.1.12.3 works fine ... all back to normal.
I'd still be interested in knowing a bit more about the MACSFANCONTROL file located here:
/private/var/folders/Ra/Rahwcn-bFgqn3y5Q-fehl++++TQ/-Tmp-
As I said in a previous post, /private is a hidden directory.

Re: 1.1.12.2 does not start after updater dialog
Thank you for the timely response.
I have just downloaded and started version 1.1.12.3 and it works.
HDD had already been at 50 degrees Celsius for some time.
I am glad it can cool down again now
One question still bothers me.
Was the update notification authentic and triggered by Macs Fan Control?

yes, it was authentic.
yes, it was authentic.
1.1.12.3 "Macs Fan Control is damaged"
Just downloaded the 1.1.12.3 update, to fix the 1.1.12.2 problem noted above. However, when I attempt to open the new file, I get a dialog box reading "Macs Fan Control is damaged and can't be opened. You should move it to the trash." So the fix isn't fixing anything, for me at least. (MacBook Pro, OS 10.8.5.)

Please re-download the app, it's fixed.
Re: UPDATE DIALOG INTERFERING WITH STARTUP
You shouldn't poke around in /private/var/ - it contains all sorts of things needed to keep your computer running properly, including swapfiles, caches, and temporary files. From the directory naming, i'd guess that that is a temporary file.WDS wrote:music-listener, I also have Macs Fan Control 1.1.12.2 installed on my own iMac 11,1, running 10.6.8, and, mysteriously, it has stopped working today for me as well ... it was working fine just yesterday. Re: 1.1.12.2 does not start after updater dialog
Thanks for the response re: the MACFANSCONTROL file in the /private/var/ - directory.
All I did was locate the file with a search, and then determined that it was an empty file.
I did nothing else ... I'm very well aware of the damage potential from any other action.
I just wanted to understand why it's there, and your guess is as good as it's gonna get.
