Macbook Pro 9 2 fan never speeds up

Post by James Butler »

Hi I have an MacBook pro with a 2.5GHz intel Core i5. one thing ive notised is that the fan never seems to speed up when its controlled by the system, even if I stress the CPU the temperature will slowly rinse to 95 the fan will still run at just 2000RPM.

would anyone say this was normal?

This is obviosly not correct.

Try cleaning the fan or use some constant or sensor based value for the fan when you need more cooling for your CPU

i have the same issue, and lots of people have that.

I'm sorry can't say for sure because I don't have that laptop (MacBookPro11,1)
But if it's brand new, then it looks like correct behavior.

I own a late 2012 i5 2.5ghz mac mini. I think it's about the same cpu with yours. My advice is not to worry about it. Coming from a pc, I'd say that these temps seem a bit high but now that I use Mac hardware I'd say it's normal. I stress tested my mac mini with the fan at auto mode for an hour with max temps of 95 celcious, and then using mac fan ontrol speed up the fan to 5500 rpm. The temps with the stress test going on dropped to about 75 celcious. When I stopped the stress test with the fan still at 5500 rpm, the temps went down to 45 celcious in just 2 minutes. During the stress test the mac mini was reaching a boost clock speed of 2,9ghz (intel turbo boost) due to having all the cores maxed out. The screen shots are from my google drive.

Well you can see that about 1700 ~ 2000 rpm

But when you stress your CPU at 95 Degree, you have to speed up the fan manualy, It's not automaticaly speeding up at Auto Mode, thats what i want to talk and ask. Is that Apple threshold temperature to speed up the fan is 90 degrees C?

Yes it is apple's threshold to speed up the fan when it hits 90 celcious. That happens if the temps are sustained for period of time. When I got my mac mini I was curious myself about this. The apple community forums are filled with people with the same question. But it is apple chooses to deliver a quiet operating computer without worring too much about temps. Needless to say that you have to push your mac really hard to burn its cpu and I don't know if it is possible with the thermaltrip technology that intel has. When a cpu thinks its too hot and there is a danger, slows itself down to prevent any damage.
So I would not worry too much. Since your mac is still new, go to an applestore and/or set up a meeting with a "apple genious" if you are still worried.

If the apple's threshold to speed up the fan when it hits 90 celcious I wont worry about that. So well my Macbook is working normally.
That exactly my question. Thanks you very much.
Sorry about my English not really good
