By the time I checked the forum, dev6 had been superseded by dev7, so I just tried that.
No joy. Same behaviour as before - no controls visible until resizing the window.
Pressing the "?", "Show Visible" came up with "Yes" even though the controls were not visible in the window at the time.
Could the fix be as simple as making the window's default/narrowest width a little larger?

I'm out of ideas at the moment. Will make a new build soon, need to think it over. Thank you for your help. Does it happen on Windows as well?

No, it just happens on the Mac OS (10.8.5) side - Win7 has no such problem.
It's not overly onerous to adjust the window size to be able to see the controls - it was just rather disconcerting the first time it came up after installing 1.4.2. I'll live...

Just to say that I also see the same issue of the controls missing when running MFC 1.4.2 on OSX 10.11.4 on my 2010 Mac Pro. It happens every time after I restart the machine. My solution has been to quit MFC and re-launch it, that always fixes the display issue, but I will try the resizing of the window the next time I see it.

Sorry, 'fraid not...
Same behaviour as before - following a computer restart, MFC dev8 appears in the menu bar, but when called, the controls are not visible until the window is resized.

Bingo! That's done it.
Following a computer restart, MFC appears in the menu bar and when asked to show itself, displays the Controls.
Thanks for the tenacity.

Build 10 also seems to work for me. Just installed it, restarted my Mac (now on 10.11.5) and the controls are displayed on first opening. Thanks CrystalIDEA!

I installed, then rebooted the machine, and up it comes, Controls and all.
